FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Vancouver, BC, August 18, 2020 – As educators, students and families gear up for a return to the COVID-19 classroom, the calmversationTM learning foundation, a not-for-profit organization developing K-12 Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs, is releasing a free 12-week care kit to support educators in easing students’ transition back to school. Funded by the Canadian Red Cross and the Government of Canada, the Back-to-School Care Kit consists of 40 lesson plans that will be released weekly, beginning on August 24th. Teachers and homeschoolers, can now enroll for free at calmversation.org.

calmversationTM’s much-needed Back-to-School Care Kit offers educators a step-by-step Social and Emotional Learning program to help students navigate the return to the classroom, whether that be in-person or virtually. During a time of uncertainty and instability, the care kit aims to support educators in creating a safe, joyful and connected learning experience, through resources, tools, and educational support.

“Providing Social and Emotional Learning opportunities for students is critical at a time when children are returning to school after months of uncertainty, social isolation and virtual learning,” says Jena Sharma, Founder, calmversationTM learning foundation. “Through calmversationTM’s free Back-to-School Care Kit, we will equip teachers and homeschoolers with the tools necessary to positively impact the social and emotional well-being of students and minimize anxiety and apprehension as they head back to the classroom.”

calmversationTM’s Back-to-School Care Kit will include activities, discussion prompts, videos, visual assets, and guidelines on:

  • The New Normal – Creating new classroom norms and establishing a safe, respectful, and compassionate social distancing environment
  • Creating a Calming Classroom Space – How to create a calming and safe physical space for students, either in-class or at home
  • Creating a Safe and Inclusive Learning Environment – Bringing calm to the lesson plan, performing emotional check-ins with students, and setting the tone for a safe space where students feel heard and are comfortable to share concerns and experiences
  • Social Justice – Communication tools for covering topics relating to race, privilege, and prejudice
  • Self-care and Support for Educators

Through the generous financial support of the Canadian Red Cross and the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund led by Employment and Social Development Canada, the program will be available to educators for free until November 30th.

In addition to the care kit, the calmversationTM learning foundation will be launching a series of online workshops and live Facebook events to engage educators on subjects relating to the current social climate, address concerns and provide community, support and training.
